Lungs Transplant

What is Lungs Transplant?

A lung transplant is a surgical procedure in which one or both diseased lungs are replaced with healthy lungs from a donor. This procedure is typically considered for patients with severe lung disease that has not responded to other treatments and is significantly affecting their quality of life. It can greatly improve breathing capacity, physical activity levels, and overall survival in eligible patients. Common conditions that may lead to a lung transplant include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension.

Indications

Lung transplants are commonly performed for conditions such as:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Certain types of lung cancer (in select cases)

Who needs a lung transplant?

Patients with end-stage lung disease that has not responded to other medical treatments may be candidates for a lung transplant. Eligibility is determined through thorough evaluation:

  • COPD: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease causing severe airflow limitation.
  • Pulmonary fibrosis: Scarring of the lungs that severely limits breathing.
  • Cystic fibrosis: A genetic disorder causing thick mucus buildup in the lungs.
  • Pulmonary hypertension: High blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs.

Other conditions that may require Lungs Transplant include: Interstitial lung disease, Bronchiectasis, Sarcoidosis affecting the lungs, Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM).

Eligible patients are placed on a transplant waiting list managed by organ procurement organizations. Wait time varies based on blood type, body size, and donor lung availability.

Who can donate lungs?

Lungs are typically donated by deceased donors. A living donor may donate a lobe of one lung in rare cases. Donor lungs must match the recipient's blood type and chest size.

Eligibility requirements

  • Have no history of serious lung disease in the donor
  • Have a compatible blood type with the recipient
  • Have no history of prolonged mechanical ventilation causing lung damage
  • Have no active lung infections
  • Have no history of significant smoking-related lung damage
  • Pass comprehensive imaging and function tests

Evaluation process

Patients undergo a thorough evaluation including medical history review, physical exams, imaging studies (chest X-ray, CT scan), pulmonary function tests, and lab tests to determine suitability for transplant.
