Kidney Transplant

What is Kidney Transplant?

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure that involves placing a healthy kidney from a donor into a person whose kidneys are no longer functioning properly, a condition known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure. The transplanted kidney takes over the job of filtering waste and excess fluid from the blood, which the recipient's own kidneys can no longer do effectively. This procedure can significantly improve the patient's quality of life, increase life expectancy, and reduce the need for long-term dialysis. Donor kidneys can come from either living donors or deceased donors, and thorough compatibility testing is done to ensure the best possible outcome.

Indications

Kidney transplants are performed for the following reasons:

  • End-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure
  • Living Donor: A healthy person can donate one of their kidneys — often a family member, friend, or altruistic donor
  • Deceased Donor: Kidneys obtained from individuals who have died through organ donation programs
  • Chronic kidney disease that has not responded to other treatments
  • Significant reduction in quality of life due to long-term dialysis dependency

Who needs a kidney transplant?

Not everyone with kidney failure is eligible for a transplant. Factors such as overall health, age, and the presence of other medical conditions are considered. Candidates are evaluated through a series of tests to determine their suitability:

  • End-stage renal disease (ESRD): Permanent loss of kidney function requiring dialysis or transplant.
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD): Long-lasting kidney disease progressing to failure.
  • Diabetic nephropathy: Kidney damage caused by diabetes.
  • Polycystic kidney disease: A genetic disorder causing cysts to grow in the kidneys.

Other conditions that may require Kidney Transplant include: Hypertensive kidney disease, Glomerulonephritis, Lupus nephritis, Recurrent kidney infections leading to chronic damage.

Each transplant hospital has its own criteria for accepting candidates. A thorough medical evaluation determines transplant eligibility.

Who can donate a kidney?

A healthy adult who is willing to donate one kidney can be a living kidney donor. The donor must be in good physical and mental health, have a compatible blood type with the recipient, and pass a comprehensive medical evaluation.

Eligibility requirements

  • Be between 18 and 60 years of age (living donor)
  • Have no history of significant organ disease such as heart, liver, or lung disease
  • Have no history of kidney disease, diabetes, or cancer
  • Have no history of active or chronic infections
  • Have no history of active substance abuse
  • Have no history of major mental health problems
  • Understand the risks of surgery and be able to follow preparation and recovery instructions

Evaluation process

A donor's kidney is evaluated with imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. Blood and urine tests confirm kidney function and compatibility. An independent assessor verifies the donor's consent is voluntary and informed.
