Hair Transplant

What is Hair Transplant / Implant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves relocating hair follicles from one part of the body — typically the back or sides of the scalp (the donor site) — to areas where hair is thinning or balding (the recipient site). This procedure is commonly used to treat male and female pattern baldness, as well as other types of hair loss. Two primary methods are used: FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), which involves removing a strip of skin from the donor area, and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), where individual hair follicles are harvested directly. The transplanted hair follicles are typically resistant to DHT, the hormone responsible for hair loss, so results are generally permanent.

Indications

Hair transplant is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia)
  • Female pattern hair loss
  • Hair loss due to trauma, burns, or scarring
  • Thinning hairline or receding hairline
  • Eyebrow, beard, or body hair restoration

Who needs a hair transplant?

Hair transplant is suitable for individuals with stable hair loss who have sufficient donor hair available. Candidacy is assessed during a detailed consultation:

  • Male pattern baldness: Gradual receding hairline and thinning crown in men.
  • Female pattern hair loss: Diffuse thinning over the crown area in women.
  • Scarring alopecia: Permanent hair loss due to trauma, burns, or scarring conditions.
  • Post-surgical hair loss: Hair loss resulting from previous scalp surgeries.

Other conditions that may require Hair Transplant include: Traction alopecia from chronic hairstyling, Eyebrow loss due to over-plucking or medical conditions, Beard or moustache patchy hair loss, Hairline lowering for cosmetic reasons.

Candidates must have sufficient donor hair at the back or sides of the scalp. Hair loss should be stable before proceeding with transplantation.

Donor site information

Hair transplants use the patient's own hair (autologous). Donor follicles are taken from areas of the scalp resistant to DHT — typically the back and sides. No external donor is required.

Eligibility requirements

  • Have sufficient donor hair at the back or sides of the scalp
  • Have stable hair loss (not actively losing hair rapidly)
  • Be in good overall health
  • Have no active scalp infections or inflammatory scalp conditions
  • Have realistic expectations about coverage and density
  • Not be on blood-thinning medications (or able to pause them safely)

Evaluation process

A detailed scalp assessment is performed including trichoscopy and hair density analysis to evaluate the donor area and plan the recipient coverage. Blood tests are conducted to rule out underlying medical causes of hair loss before the procedure.
