Cosmetic Surgery
What is Cosmetic Surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is a branch of medical surgery focused on enhancing a person's appearance through surgical and non-surgical procedures. It aims to improve aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportion. Unlike reconstructive surgery, which is intended to restore function or normal appearance after trauma or illness, cosmetic surgery is primarily elective and performed for aesthetic reasons. Common procedures include facial surgeries (rhinoplasty, facelift, blepharoplasty), breast surgeries (augmentation, reduction, lift), body contouring (liposuction, tummy tuck), and non-surgical options (Botox, dermal fillers, laser resurfacing).
Indications
Cosmetic surgery procedures are indicated for the following reasons:
- Facial aesthetic concerns — nose shape, sagging skin, drooping eyelids
- Breast size or shape dissatisfaction — augmentation, reduction, or lift
- Body contouring after significant weight loss or pregnancy
- Correction of protruding ears or facial asymmetry
- Non-surgical rejuvenation — wrinkle reduction, volume restoration
Who is a candidate for cosmetic surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is appropriate for individuals in good overall health who have realistic expectations and a specific aesthetic concern they wish to address:
- Rhinoplasty candidates: Individuals seeking nose reshaping for aesthetic or functional reasons.
- Breast augmentation candidates: Women seeking to increase or restore breast volume.
- Body contouring candidates: Individuals with stubborn fat deposits or loose skin after weight loss.
- Facial rejuvenation candidates: Individuals seeking to reduce visible signs of aging.
Other conditions that may require Cosmetic Surgery include: Eyelid correction (blepharoplasty), Ear reshaping (otoplasty), Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) post-pregnancy, Non-surgical Botox or filler treatments.
Psychological factors and motivations should be carefully evaluated. Candidates must have realistic expectations about outcomes.
Donor information
Cosmetic surgery procedures are primarily performed on the patient's own body. Fat transfer procedures use the patient's own fat harvested from other body areas (autologous). External donors are not typically involved.
Eligibility requirements
- Be in good overall physical health
- Be a non-smoker or willing to stop smoking before and after surgery
- Have a stable weight (especially for body contouring procedures)
- Have no active skin infections in the treatment area
- Have realistic expectations about the outcomes
- Undergo psychological evaluation if necessary
Evaluation process
Patients undergo a thorough consultation with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon. This includes reviewing medical history, physical examination of the target area, discussion of goals and realistic outcomes, and pre-operative blood tests and imaging if required.
