Bone Marrow Transplant

What is Bone Marrow Transplant?

A bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a medical procedure that involves replacing damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy bone marrow. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue found in the center of bones that produces blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This procedure is often used to treat conditions like leukemia, lymphoma, and severe aplastic anemia. It can help restore the body's ability to produce healthy blood cells and strengthen the immune system.

Indications for Bone Marrow Transplant:

BMT is primarily used to treat conditions such as:

  • Leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma
  • Aplastic anemia or myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Sickle cell disease or thalassemia
  • In some cases, severe autoimmune diseases may also be treated with BMT.

Types of Bone Marrow Transplants:

  • Autologous Transplant:: This involves collecting the patient’s own stem cells from their bone marrow or blood, usually after chemotherapy, and then reinfusing them after the treatment.
  • Allogeneic Transplant:: This involves using stem cells from a donor, which can be a relative or an unrelated person. The donor’s stem cells must match the patient’s tissue type to reduce the risk of complications.
  • Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant:: Stem cells can also be collected from the umbilical cord blood of newborns, which can be used for transplantation.

Who can donate bone marrow?

A healthy adult who matches the recipient's tissue type can donate bone marrow. Donors may be a sibling, a matched unrelated donor, or stem cells may be sourced from umbilical cord blood.

Eligibility requirements

  • Be in good overall physical health
  • Have a compatible tissue type (HLA matching) with the recipient
  • Have no history of blood-borne infections such as HIV or hepatitis
  • Have no history of significant organ disease
  • Have no history of active cancer
  • Understand and consent to the donation process voluntarily

Evaluation process

Donors undergo HLA (human leukocyte antigen) typing and a comprehensive medical evaluation including blood tests and physical examinations. The patient undergoes conditioning treatment (chemotherapy or radiation) before the transplant to prepare the body to receive new stem cells.
